How to identify the material of ribbon

Generally, combustion method is used to identify fibers, but it is not easy to judge blended products. It is necessary to take one yarn from the warp and weft directions (i.e., straight and horizontal directions) and burn it separately. Take out several warp and weft yarns of two unknown types of webbing, burn them with a lighter, and observe some physical phenomena during the burning process to determine the raw materials of warp and weft yarns. During combustion, observe the flame, melting, smell and ash after combustion.

1、 Cotton fiber and hemp fiber

Both cotton fiber and hemp fiber ignite immediately when they are close to the flame, burning rapidly, the flame is yellow and emitting blue smoke. The difference between the smell of the two during combustion and the ash after combustion is that the cotton combustion gives out the smell of paper, and the hemp combustion gives out the smell of vegetation ash; After burning, cotton has little powder ash, which is black or gray, while hemp produces a small amount of gray powder ash.

2、 Nylon and polyester

Nylon (nylon), the scientific name of polyamide fiber, quickly shrinks and melts into a white gel near the flame. It melts, drips and bubbles in the flame. When burning, there is no flame. It is difficult to continue to burn without the flame. It emits the smell of celery. After cooling, the light brown melt is not easy to grind.

The scientific name of polyester fiber is polyester fiber. It is easy to ignite, and it will melt when it is near the flame. When it is burning, it will emit black smoke while melting. It is a yellow flame and emits a fragrant smell. After burning, the ash will be black brown hard lump, which can be twisted by fingers. Nylon webbing: near the flame, it will melt, melt, drip and blister, not directly ignite, like celery flavor, hard, round, light, brown to gray, beaded. Polyester webbing: melt shrinkage, melt burning, dripping and bubbling near the flame, can continue to burn, a few have smoke, extremely weak sweet taste, hard round, black or light brown.

3、 Acrylic and polypropylene (PP)

The scientific name of acrylic fiber is polyacrylonitrile fiber, which softens and shrinks near the fire, emits black smoke after fire, and the flame is white. It burns rapidly after leaving the flame, giving out the pungent smell of burning meat. The ash after burning is irregular black hard block, which is fragile when twisted by hand.

Polypropylene fiber, the scientific name of polypropylene fiber, melts and shrinks near the flame, and is flammable. It burns slowly away from the flame and emits black smoke. The upper end of the flame is yellow, and the lower end is blue. It emits a smell of oil. The ash after burning is hard, round, light yellow-brown particles, and is fragile when twisted by hand.

4、 Vinylon and Chlorine

The scientific name of vinylon is polyvinyl formal fiber. It is not easy to ignite, and it will melt and contract in the near flame. When burning, there will be a little flame at the top. When the fiber is melted into a colloidal flame, the flame will become larger, and there will be thick black smoke, which will give out a bitter smell. After burning, there will be small black beaded particles, which can be crushed by fingers.

The scientific name of chloroprene fiber is polyvinyl chloride fiber, which is difficult to burn, and extinguishes immediately after leaving the fire. The flame is yellow, and the lower end is green and white smoke. It emits a pungent and pungent sour smell. After burning, the ash is black brown irregular hard lump, and the fingers are not easy to twist.

5、 Spandex and fluorine fiber

The scientific name of spandex fiber is polyurethane fiber, which is melted and burned near the fire. When burning, the flame is blue. When leaving the fire, it continues to melt and burn, emitting a special irritating odor. The ash after burning is soft, fluffy, black ash. The scientific name of fluorine fiber is polytetrafluoroethylene fiber, which is called fluorite fiber by ISO organization. It only melts near the flame, is difficult to ignite, and does not burn. The edge flame is blue-green carbonized, and decomposes after melting. The gas is toxic, and the molten substance is hard round black beads. Fluorine fiber is often used to manufacture high-performance sewing thread in the textile industry.

With these combustion related identification methods to support your preliminary judgment of the material, you can generally achieve accurate identification.
